Lesson 5 - Italian Unification - 1830-48 - A source activity
So what does make a source useful? Below the diagram for the lesson and (right) a link to some serious  thinking about utility.

Picture
In groups of four consider the following five sources and answer the questions below.
Activities

1. Study Source A. What does the author mean in the following passages? [7]

(a) Italians were for centuries ‘derided, because we are not one people, because we are divided’.
(b) The Austrian eagle has drunk ‘The blood of Italy and the Polish blood’.

2. How far do Sources B and E agree about the reasons for the defeat of the 1830-31 revolutions in Italy?  [8]
It is important that you identify both similarities and differences between the sources.

3. How useful is Source A as evidence about the national movement in Italy during the 19th century?  [10] It is important that you identify both positive and negative characteristics of the sources.
