Shooting your own movie perception test.
At this very moment, your attention is focused on the words you are reading. While you are looking at this sentence, are you giving any attention to the colour of the wall of the room you are in? Are you aware of the position that your feet are in? No. As we have seen, when System 2 is engaged, your awareness of the world around you is diminished. If you are concentrating really hard you might not even see a gorilla walk into the room. The movie perception test was developed by Daniel Simons the man behind the invisible gorilla experiment. |

But for it to work well you also need to know a little about basic film making techniques: establishing shot, two shot, shot reverse shot and 180 degree rule.
What do you need?
How do you do it?
- Two actors and a short piece of dialogue
- Some props that you can use to make deliberate 'continuity errors'
- iPad to film and iMovie to edit
How do you do it?
- Set up your scene with props and shoot an establishing two shot e.g one character arrives.
- Camera A films a line of dialogue, then you move your camera to B to shot the response. (Shot reverse shot).
- Move the props and then shoot the next part of the dialogue.
- Repeat until dialogue is complete.
